  • eSATA cable length and quality?

Posted by Scott Norton on January 7, 2010 at 2:15 pm

I am posting this in the “Pro” forum because I felt that it would be the pro users who would have enough experience to have noticed a difference between cables.

I am wondering if there is a rule of thumb for the longest cable length for an eSATA cable, attaching HD to computer. I know with audio cables there is degradation past a certain length, but not sure about eSATA.

Also, are there different qualities of cables? Is this a marketing ploy like speaker cables costing thousands??? I know in that scenario, the quality of connectors may be better, but with eSATA, I usually have them hooked up semi-permanent.

    Thanks in advance.

My general rule of thumb with just about any cable is no more then 15 feet.

For things like cable runs surprisingly Wikipedia is a very good source.

    (2 metres)

As for connectors – you get what you pay for. I’d say the cheaper connectors will be less durable.

2 meters for eSata is a good rule. When it comes to high frequency signals (like digital), the quality (purity) of the conductor and the characteristics of the dielectric are important. But I would think any cable that conforms to the standard would suffice, at least for shorter runs. The connector is more likely to be a problem is cheaper cables.

FYI, the high-dollar “audiophile” cable isn’t merely a marketing ploy. I have experienced significant differences in both speaker and interconnect cables on my own system and on others. I grant that what is significant to me may be insignificant or inaudible to someone else…just as my wife can’t seem to see compression artifacts or see any significant difference between SD & HD. And I personally don’t have the funds to buy cable that costs hundreds of dollars per foot. But that doesn’t mean I can’t hear the difference on a sufficiently high resolution system. (end rant) 🙂
