  • Error when capturing audio using MXO2 LE with Fostex DAT D15

Posted by Lou Williams on March 14, 2012 at 9:21 am

I am trying to digitize some DAT recorded dialog to use on a video editing project. My DAT is connected to my MXO2 LE via a Mackie VLZ mixer. My problem is I keep getting the following Error Report whenever I try to capture,

There is a problem with the signal from your source device.
Make sure that your source device is properly connected to your
Matrox video hardware and that your input video format matches your
Sequences video format or is compatible for use with your sequence

This is very strange considering that I have no issue capturing audio/video with either my Beta or DV decks running through the same mixer to MXO2 configuration. I tried just about every conceivable configuration within MXO2 i.e. RCA connection, instead XLR, Mono vice stereo, different BIT depth, no deck control etc. but still have same error. Oddly UV meters show good signal on both the mixer and the MXO2 meters. Really at a loss to understand what exactly the problem is. I am using my MXO2 in conjunction with Adobe Premiere CS 5.5 on Window 7 machine. Any help would be appreciated

I used to have an MXO2LE w/ MAX and I also have a Mackie VLZ3 mixer so I’m very familiar with your setup and what you’re trying to do.

Unfortunately, even Matrox will tell you that the MXO2 line is not meant for capturing audio on its own. A quick troll of the MXO2 user forum will show that in this case, they recommend you capture it as video and delete the video track. Which would mean of course that it would need to be converted to a video format, which of course can only be done on the computer anyway if you only have a DAT to start with so that leaves you in a tight spot.

    Food for thought: https://forum.matrox.com/mxo/viewtopic.php?t=7408&highlight=audio+capture

Additionally, the MXO2 line does not support direct capture within Premiere Pro. MXO2 capture has to be done via one of Matrox’s bundles applications. Vetura Capture on the Mac, not sure about the PC.

    Matt,

Thanks I verifed this issue and you are right. Really dissappointed that I didn’t do a better job of research. But who of believed that Matrox would make such a flawed design.
Anyway I have good work around. I just load my Beta deck with a blank tape and let it play. My DAT is deck controlled via Adobe Capture screen so I can log, realtime capture etc. I set the Video/Audio capture setting on the screen for audio only and turn off the Beta sound output at the mixer. Instead I feed the DAT audio to monitors. Painful but at the end all captured was the audio, no video was captured. Can’t thankyou enough. Next stop email to Matrox

Wow, that is quite the workaround! But well done indeed!

Yes, the issues of the MXO2 line really were very frustrating for me to say the least. Especially as I purchased mine with an Adobe switcher bundle, I had expected it to work. This was back in September. As it turned out, the drivers for CS5.5 were unusable. After countless calls and waiting for months, I got fed up and got the vendor to switch it for me with the AJA IoXT which has performed much better for the tasks I need it for. I do miss the RCA audio ins and the S-Video (would’ve been nice to still have as I just had to buy the blackmagic analogue to SDI mini converter to get that functionality back), but as editing hardware, I couldn’t go on. Matrox only just released new 5.5 software a couple weeks ago and even that is still beta. How long will it take for CS6?

The MXO2 was great for Final Cut Pro 7 and performed very well there. No one would have noticed that it was lack-luster on Adobe. The functionality that it has available to it is great, but it should just work.

Anyway, that was a long ramble. I’m glad that you got what you needed done and I’m glad that I was able to help!

    Best,
    Matt
