  • Error Scrubbing Through Audio

Posted by Stewart Goldstein on September 18, 2005 at 3:59 am

While scrubbing through a timeline, with the Command key held down so as to hear the audio, I keep getting this message:

After Effects error: opening sound component (-2166)

What do I have to do to make that stop?

    Thx

Haven’t seen that one b4. Can you do a RAM preview with audio? If it’s just the audio scrub that’s giving problems, then I’d suggest trying another audio file and then a restart as a last resort – perhaps something’s screwy with memory.

If it’s affecting RAM previews then it may be the audio file itself that is the cause. Test with another audio file. If it’s the audio file, then use QT Pro to resave the audio into another format.

What type of audio files arr you using? I hope it’s not MP3.

This problem started happening recently with AIF and WAV files.

The RAM preview is fine; the error message pops up only while scrubbing through the timeline. This has happened with more than one file, and even after restarts.

Try upgrading to version 6.5.1, and see if setting your audio to draft quality helps during the scubbing. Additionally, you may want to look at setting your audio preview preferences to be identical to that of your audio file.

The audio prefs are already the same as the audio file.

The problem showed up right after the latest upgrade of Quicktime was installed. (7.0.2 or something like that. Whatever the latest one is.)

I am using AE 5.5; would this problem go away with 6.5?

    Thx

It’s never a good idea to upgrade too quickly. 😉

The latest version of AE is 6.5.1. I really can’t answer your Q if it’ll work fine after upgrading. What I will suggest however is that you download the tryout for 6.5 and also the update to 6.5.1 . You will be able to install both versions on a single system as long as you are careful not to install them into the same location.

The tryout if fully functional for 30 days.

In terms of fixing your problem, assuming that it is a QT issue, then try converting the audio to .mov and see if it helps.

    Good Luck

I think it’s a QT issue … somebody recently advised downgrading to 7.0.1 or 6.5 or so.

How do you downgrade to 7.0.1 once you’ve installed a later version?

That’s a good question, as I’ve only read about it in this forum over the past few days. Perhaps a search for “7.0.2” and “quicktime”?

    … unless I’m mistaken.

I’m having the same problem after a recent upgrade. I’m running AE 6.0, new QT, new Final Cut Pro, and new Decklink video card.

    Any luck with a cure?
