AE 5.5 MAC :: Error opening SOUND COMPONENT -2166

I can no longer scrub a real time preview on my system using the mouse and command key.
i could about 4 months ago, then (i think after upgrading from QuickTime Pro v6 to v7, now it no longer works, I get the AE error -2166)

there is no documentation on Adobe’s site.

    Can any one help?

I have quit all apps and restarted, and only open AE 5.5 but still it happens.
This ruins the workflow big time, especially trying to work back to FCP.

please send all emails to so*****@***oo.com

    Hi,

I am getting the same error on a Windows system, AE 6.0 Pro; also after upgrading to QT 7.0

I will let you know as soon as I find a fix.

    Thanks.

I just had this same error with AE 6.0 Pro.

Found a few others that have the issue via Google Search.

Anyway I think ITunes or the very latest Quicktime might be the culprit.

I uninstalled Quicktime…then reinstalled with a fresh Quicktime install I had downloaded a while back..7.02a38

Quicktime now tries to tell me to update to the latest…but I’m happy with the old one that now gives me a working system!

Yep…you are right. I had played around by shutting down the quicktime, ipod and itunes executables running (via task amanger) and then restarting AE. After that, it game me some similar problems but virtually disappeared after I changed my audio preferences to 22kHz (odd, I know). Now, when I restart the system, kill the exe’s and then start AE, no problem there.

I will follow your suit and dump my “latest” version of QT for an older version.

    Thanks,

    Milton

Great to here that helped Milton…

Can I ask you a basic question..(I’m in the process of learning AE via Total Training)…when I press “Space” and do a preview…I should be able to hear audio files right? I know my audio works generally because individual tracks can be previewed via the “.” on the num pad…(thus the Quicktime version works)

For some reason I just can’t get audio to preview along with all the other layers…

I’ve checked the little speaker on the preview controls + looked that the speaker is “on” on the individual track…

Can you think of any obvious reason why my audio won’t play via space bar preview? I’m not sure whether I’ve just missed some ‘newbie’ option..or still might be having Quicktime issues or something.

I’ve tried different audio files…even tried a different install on another pc…any clues? I’m hoping it’s just a simple beginner AE problem I’m having.

    Thanks.

Just found the answer Milton…”Zero” on num pad is ram preview not space…frustrating thing about learning a new program is when you’ve got no one to ask some of these real basic quick questions!!

    Thanks, Matt

Sorry it took so long to reply. It is frustrating indeed. I wish there was more “real-time” audio playback like in Vegas Video.

I also use the little button on the play back palette (far right, with a bar and an arrow) previews with audio.
