  • error occured while creating media file: exception thrown by media called

Posted by Adam Buell on September 5, 2011 at 5:39 am

I downloaded the trial version of Vegas Movie Studio HD 11 and everything works perfectly fine except when I try to render a video. I keep getting the error message saying “An error occurred while creating media file. Exception thrown by media called. I have even tried uninstalling and then reinstalling but I keep getting the same error. Files render fine on my laptop but my trial period is up, however my desktop is giving me this same problem every time. I have no idea what to do about this, hopefully someone here knows how to fix this problem.

The key is “error occured while creating media file”. This is a Windows error.
Do you have enough free hard disk space for 2X your likely project size? How much space is remaining on the TEMP drive?

Another possibility is that there is a problem with the filename. File already exists or already open in another program. Try using a different filename in the “Render As” menu.

The error was actually “method called” instead of “media called”, I actually read it wrong. But yeah I have plenty of space for the video. I don’t get the option to change the name of the file because as soon as I hit render as I get the error. I even used a Russian portable version and get the same error.

“Method Called” may indicate that you don’t have the right CODEC installed. Try a different CODEC by selecting a different “Render As” filetype.

Whatever you do DO NOT install a CODEC pack – they will replace your codecs installed by Vegas with some really inferior or defective ones.

not sure what you mean by selecting a different render as file type. whenever i hit render as, it brings that error up right away.

[adam buell] “I even used a Russian portable version and get the same error.”

What is “a Russian portable version“?

FWIW, original poster, I have exactly the same problem on one of my machines but with the full version of Sony Vegas Pro 11.

When I try to select “Render As”, the dialog will not come up and I am presented with a really unhelpful error message.

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? For anyone interested, here is the problem as I described it to Sony Media Software support:

    Hi Sony Support folks,

I have searched the forum for similar problems, but don’t see any reported. In Sony Vegas Pro 11 (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, both the “original” builds and the new 424/425 builds) I can’t actually render any video.

When I select File > Render As… I am immediately presented with an error dialog that says:

“An error occurred while creating the media file .
Exception thrown by method called ”

Yes, there’s a space between “file” and the “.” The dialog won’t even report the error correctly. Funky. Similarly, there’s no data after “method called “.

Oddly, I find that other “render” functions (that do not rely on the dialog in question) *do* work. For example, I can “real time render” to a wav file and the “Upload to YouTube” option (which renders and uploads without exposing the Render As dialog) both work.

Of course, any rendering that relies on showing the Render As dialog fails. So, for example, I *can’t* do a Tools > Render to New Track, either. But I get a different error message when selecting that option. Vegas reports:

“An error occurred during the current operation.
    Error 0x80131501 (message missing)”

To try to solve this issue, I uninstalled all versions of Vegas and did a fresh install of version 11 (the updated 424 build) and still see this behavior. I guess my system is missing something that the new funky Render As dialog expects to find?

Of course, this happens on my main editing machine while I do not see this behavior on other machines like my laptops.

Welcome any solutions you may have! I miss my Vegas…

    Thanks and Best Regards,
    Keith

[Yoki Alfikar] “configuration or codec pack ?”

If you have codec paks installed you just found your problem. Uninstall them, re-install Vegas, and try again. (note: some codec paks do not uninstall completely and damage your PC permanently. You should never install a codec pak on a video editing PC)
