ERROR: A necessary function has not been implemented
Posted by Israel Prophitt on December 27, 2008 at 9:02 pmI have ran into an issue with Vegas Pro 8.0 and 8.1 (x64).
I don’t get this error when the media file is an AVI file, but when it is a M2T file. When I right click on the audio portion of the clip in the timeline and choose “Open copy in audio editor”, I get this message:
In Vegas 8.0:
An error occurred during the current operation.
A necessary function has not been implemented. In Vegas 8.1:
No error message, but when the wav file is returned from editing, it is out of sync with the video. It’s not the editor that’s doing it, because when the editor comes up, I just close it (ie: not saving the file), and the wav file is as I said earlier … out of sync in Vegas … or it may be … squished?.I have un-installed and re-installed all my Sony apps, but it still does it. I have Vegas 6 installed as well, and the process works flawlessly! By the way, I am using iZotope RX as my audio cleanup app).
Any help would help. Thank you for your time.

December 28, 2008 at 1:15 amThere is a know issue with those file types in the prior versions. Make sure you have the latest Vegas 8.0C. I’m not familiar with your audio app but I am sure the error is with Vegas. This is the first time I have learned of this particular problem. Have you tried rendering the offending clip to another format first and then editing in the audio app?

December 28, 2008 at 1:38 amYes Sir, I have version 8.0c (build 260). I can render to avi, then “open copy in audio editor” and it works just fine, and it’s not just one particular clip giving me a problem. They all have the same behavior(M2T). There seems to be an issue with Vegas 8 and M2Ts.
My usual work flow (pre-v8) was to render to Cineform’s intermediate avi format, edit, then switch back to using the M2Ts for final render. However, since I moved to v8, I can no longer do that(without going back to v6).
I guess I will have to render to an intermediate format until Sony works out some bugs with M2T editing.

December 28, 2008 at 7:05 amI’m using VP8.0c, and for this a sample M2T file.
You are getting 2 results:
1] ERROR on trying to open in IzoRx
2] Out of Sync
For 1] I get the same result – an ERROR message. However, I am NOT getting this in Vegas7. Plus In V7 I get the Audio to open in both IzoRx and Sound Forge. But here’s the thing, back in VP8.0c I can NOT open in IzoRx but I can in SF – and ONLY as the “Open in SF” option, the “Open Copy in SF” – no!
As far as I can tell I am not getting 2] – out of sync issues.
So, to recap:
In Vegas 7 I can open in either IzoRx or SF, and, as far as I can tell, no out of sync issues
In VegasPro 8.0c I can not open in IzoRx but I can ONLY open in SF as “Open in Sound Forge” but I definitely can’t “Open as Copy”, and, as far as I can tell, no out of sync issues.
So, V7 yes; V8 not fully, only using SF as “Open in Sound Forge”; no out of synch issues as far as I can tell.
What IS interesting is that the MPEG2 audio gets “converted” to WAV. I can read this in its properties. However, I have no idea what this can mean for this “issue” or that it does or doesn’t have any bearing on the issue at all – I am just noting this “switch”?
Just to also confirm, I have no issue openning WAVs which are part of the AVIs.
Is it possible that VP8c is choking on the MPEG2 “handshake” to IzoRx? As I can successfully accomplish this in V7, to me this doesn’t suggest that there is something substantially or fundamentally awry, which in itself would point and agree what you are saying there is a “bug”.
Interesting, I am somewhat dumbfounded that this has not been picked-up by others?

January 3, 2009 at 8:06 pmI believe (after more testing) that the issue is with how Vegas 8 deals with M2T files and not with iZotope in particular. I can change my “Audio Editor” and the file still comes back out of sync.
I can (like you) perform the operation flawlessly in an older version of Vegas (v6 for me), and it works when the source is AVI. I converted all of my M2Ts to Cinform’s intermediate codec (AVI) and it work now.
NOTE: v8 does not come with Cineform’s intermediate codec. (or it’s a newer version that’s not compatable) I also have version 6 of Vegas, so I renamed the cfhd.dll found in the v8 directory, then copied the older cfhd.dll from the v6 directory to the v8 directory … wow it works. I can import and export to cineform’s intermediate codec in v8.

February 13, 2009 at 8:18 amHi Israel, I was having the same problems with Vegas 8.0C and Audition 1.5 (it’s old, but it works). The workaround I found was to split the audio into smaller bits. If you make sure that the audio is not locked to the video, select a point in the audio timeline and hit ‘s’ which will ‘split’ the audio. Then pick a place a little farther down (maybe under 5 minutes) and do the same thing. Now you should be able to “open copy in audio editor” with no problems. Just make sure that Vegas has not inserted fade points and you will never hear the split.
Let me know if that works for you. If not, you may need to experiment with different audio lengths. -

February 14, 2009 at 7:22 pmNever mind. The audio stream that I was able to manipulate was a wav. The M2T audio is still giving me the error.
That’s what I get for working through midnight 🙂

February 15, 2009 at 4:13 amThanks. Understood … I know what those after midnight work sessions can be like. I will have to wait and see if Sony fixes the issue in a patch. Until then, I will use v8.0 (32-bit).

February 15, 2009 at 8:44 amOne more tidbit: If you switch to using only left channel or right channel the error goes away. Weird…

April 3, 2009 at 3:56 pmI am something of a novice and have recently finally sat down to edit together and tidy up clips forming an interview.
I am using M2T files and found that, though initially I had no problem, I get the same error (‘a necessary function has not been implemented’). I wish to edit the audio with a program I am familiar with, Cool Edit 2. Taking Colin’s tip, I found another way around this without splitting the audio further. Because I could “open a copy” provided I “swicthed” to left only or right only channel first, I was at least able to create an audio take. I then rendered the stereo track I really wished to use as a wav and named it with the same take as the one I had made from the single track. This replaced the left or right only track with the stereo track I wanted. I could then ‘open in audio editor’ the section of audio belonging to a single clip. I repeated this for additional clips but found I had to open each clip separately in Vegas in addition to make the wav file I needed.
This seems a long way to get the functionality I want. Perhaps there is a quicker way to do this even with the existing limitations. Did anyone find another way to resolve this or hear of any proposals to fix the bug?
