The problem is memory. As you work on your file, Photoshop pulls from the HD memory. Try saving your file more often, that will help release some of the memory that PS is pulling from the HD. Another thing you could try is cropping your image. I’ve run into this several time. you may have image data outside the canvas area that you don’t intend to use.That image data is using memory. Crop the image and remove that unwanted data.

And, of course, clear as much off your HD as possible.

Thanks for that.
So if when I get this message, I crop a little, I will be able to save?
It hurts to have to loose maybe an hours work, to have to restart Photoshop.
Why doesn’t purge free up space to allow a save?

Do you have more than one HD on you system or is it partitioned? Make sure you scratch disk in your preferences is set up for the right drive.

When you get that error check you hard drive space. If it seems to be all gone, it’s because Photoshop is using all the HD space for memory. Once you recieve that error there is not much you can do. If you can dump some stuff from your HD, that may work. You also can try all the purges. Cropping at this point probably won’t help because it’s the history that’s using a lot of the scratch space. That is why you can save when you first open it up but not after you’ve done some work, because of PS multiple undo’s, it uses a ton of memory. (when you crop it saves the data from before the crop and after the crop so you can undo it if you want)

The best thing to do is get as much RAM as you computer can hold. I use to have that problem and upgraded my computer to a gig of Ram and ever have any problems. That is because the computer now has enough space in RAM so it doesn’t have to use HD space.

You can also get Firewire drive and use that as more scratch space.

Underbelly’s right

Once you get the message, the only thing you can do is clear some space on the drive or quit out of Photoshop and start over..
Cropping the image just helps to keep the file size down so you don’t use all your memory as quickly..

I’d use his suggestions of a firewire drive, more ram or both.

Otherwise, save often, close and open the file often. Closing the file will clear the history.
