EPS files in motion
I cant seem to get Motion to except my EPS files. I thought it would.Any input?

Motion doesn’t support EPS- convert to a bitmap first. But there is a plugin that allows you to import Illustrator files:

so, does Motion 3 except EPS?

Motion (any version) supports PDF and PDF-compatible AI files, but not EPS. This is easy enough to work around, though:
1. If you have Illustrator, you can open the EPS file and save it out as a PDF-compatibe AI file.
2. Easier and cheaper (heh) you can open an EPS file in Preview (the Apple Preview app found in /Applications) and save it as a PDF.
Once you convert to a PDF, Motion will read your file in vector format, preserving quality at any resolution.

Are you sure it’s actually reading in vector and not JPG from the PDF?

If the PDF contains vector data, then it reads it as vector and is dynamically rasterized at any resolution. If the PDF contains bitmap data (like a photo), then it will crap out when it’s enlarged (as would any bitmap format).

Yeah I’m not sure about that — I tried importing a PDF shape from illustrator and moving it in 3D space and I got some stair stepping.
Motion 3’s own shape objects DO of course rasterize perfectly at any scale in 2D and 3D…
I heard however that you can paste Illustrator shapes directly in to Motion. I believe the guy at motionsmarts.com has a note about this on his downloads page.

I should mention for any latecoming newbies that if you’re seeing jaggies, or stairstepping it could be because you’re zooming in on vector art, rather than resizing it.
More importantly, make sure you’ve selected the object in the media tab of the project pane, then go to the media tab of the inspector and UNcheck “fixed resolution.”

Matth is right. Even vector PDFs will get jaggies when scaling while that pesky “fixed resolution” is checked. It seems to be checked by default.

It is checked by default to maintain real time playback. Depending on the file and how far you zoom in it can really make Motion chug big time. So I build everything and then uncheck the fixed resolution when I’m ready to export.
