  • EPIC or RED MX 16 Bit Debayer : is it Worth ?

Posted by Gabriele Turchi on September 5, 2011 at 4:42 am

    Hi all ,
i am experimenting with epic Footage ,
i am wondering if Epic should be set as 16 bit in Resolve to get the best out of it …

I heard that epic R3D should be 16 Bit (but honestly i never read anything official from RED about it ) …

Today i tested a bit on Resolve using the the keyer , switching between 10 and 16 bit i can’t tell the difference …

i keyed an element of the image , having the key highlighted (as high contrast B&W matte) i switched between 16 and 10 and the key stayed the same ( i think maybe i saw a couple of pixels changing (but literally a couple )

so , when and how 16 bit should help ?
i mean if even the keyer does not find benefit ?
i always thought that a higher Bith depth can be easily recognized on a cleaner key (which also mean a nicer imager during a color correction (smoother transition between colors …)

but again i can’t really noticing if is worth (and 16bit is WAY more resource demanding (playback way slower …)

does anyone ever tested properly the difference between 10 and 16 even with the RED One 4k ?

    thanks

It helps when you write the invoice 😉
Also if the images are poor looking, you can “make sure” you did the best you could .
Well, if you choose Log, it might actually be better . Dud you try that too ?

    A slice of color…

i know that working in 16 would give the feeling “i have used the best ”

but at 10 bit i can debayer EPiC at Full resolution in realtime (2 RR card ) ,so the experience would be smooth , at 16 is not realtime at all ….

about log : not sure sometimes red logfilm seems fantastic , but i have the feeling that red gamma 2 is giving me the best in resolve (unless i apply logtolin lot or a film print Lut …)
i think that AUTOColor does not work properly with Log images ….am i wrong?

    thanks

Then you can create your grade in 10bit with realtime performance, and render at higher bit rates.

Well that make no sense ,
You can do that with the resolution ..not with color depth …
Color depth is part of the grading creative and technical process …needs to be at the “higher affordable level” while grading … Switching it after should change the image …even if in this case I really can’t see any differences at all (even on the keyer …)
