  • Enterprise class drive RAID0/1 – which one?

Posted by Alex Gerulaitis on June 21, 2012 at 3:32 am

Need to order two enterprise class (1.2m MTBF, 5-year warranty, 7200rpm, RAID-capable, 6Gbs) 2TB SATA drives for a small internal RAID0 setup, and can’t figure out which ones.

Seagate enterprise drives (Constellation ES, ES.2) carry a warranty of 3 years since the first of the year. Before that, it was 5.

WD RE4 is 3Gbit/s rather than 6, and has been around for 2-3 years – a bit old in the tooth?

Hitachi 7K3000 and 7K4000 series appear to be the only ones matching all of the conditions above.

Are Hitachi 7K4000 and 7K3000 drives really the only choices for enterprise class models that have:
    – 7200rpm
    – 6Gbs SATA
    – 5 year warranty?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

With all the consolidation in the SATA HDD manufacturing space, yep, we’re down to three companies (really it’s two since WD bought Hitachi GST last year, but they haven’t consolidated their brands or product lines).

If you opt for the 7K4000, make sure whatever is acting as your RAID controller is AF-friendly.

    Best,
    Andy
