Your graphics card is pretty good- it’s not the problem.
There are several things that could cause this problem.
    (1) See how much hardrive do you have free?
    (2) How much ram does you iMac have?
You mention that this problem is recent? You should try resetting the P-RAM. Do do this, click restart, then, when the screen turns white, quickly hit Command+Option+P+R. See full instructions here. Go to https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 then click on resetting PRAM/NRAM.

Yes, resetting the PRAM and the NRAM is a temporary fix, but it won’t solve your problem permanently.
Good tips include: (1) Logging out of all other users (2) restarting your computer before and after using Motion (3) Try to keep as less programs open while using Motion (4) Upgrade your computer’s hardrive & ram
One other thing if you are using Microsoft’s Mac programs – Word, Powerpoint, Outlook- PLEASE quit all of those. They slow down the computer terribly. Virtual machines and other large programs (video editors (FCPX), 3D modelers etc.) also assist in slowing down the computer.

    Hope I was helpful,

    ~AJ
