Activity Forums Blackmagic Cameras End to End Prores workflow Question

As a long time GH4 user, I’ll be looking to upgrade eventually to the BMPCC 4K. In post production, I’ve always loved working with Prores for both editing and exporting . Since the BMPCC 4K can acquire all forms of Prores internally, it seems to be an ideal choice for having a End to End Prores workflow (acquire>edit>finish in the same format). Outside of increased file size, are there any downsides of this approach that I should be aware about?

Extra info: I primarily edit in both FCPX and Premiere on my MacBook Pro.

No downsides that I’m aware of; I use this same end-to-end workflow and (according to cinematographer John Brawley) most network television dramas in the US use it as well.

With the BMPCC 4K, you of course have the option of shooting in Blackmagic Raw (aka BRAW), which will give you smaller file sizes and more flexibility in terms of highlight recovery, changing ISO, etc., although Prores HQ in log may be robust enough for your purposes. If I were shooting documentary or otherwise shooting in uncontrolled lighting situations and where I am working fast, I’d probably use BRAW since it’ll give me the most flexibility for fixing exposure issues in post.

As a GH3/4 user to P4K, I can say since it comes with a copy of Resolve Pro with the camera, BRAW is your friend. Smaller sizes recording than ProRes HQ (best for 4K+ capture), and as Brad says, better highlight recovery with 12bit Braw. Easy to add a LUT for quick export, or play with as you please.
For TB/$, the Samsung T5/7 is your best recording media, and SmallRig is my cage of choice. Hope your using a Metabones Speed Booster with full frame glass for best results!
