end of project problem with format SD – HD

I edited a piece on FCP shot with the Sony PMW 350 camera in SD mode 50i 720 x 576(supposedly). I did a list and transfer into my project but didn’t realize that the capture for te project was left in HD. The images were very strange. The color and the luminance were too hard and we noticed some flutter in certain shots. The director told me it was ok though, it’s the first time we’ve used this camera, so we went ahead and did the edit. When he went to do the digi cut the technician realized my mistake. Of course they rejected his piece due to the quality. Now I have tomorrow to fix it and I’m not really sure what to do.
Would the fact that the capture setting being on HD would have had an effect when I listed and transfered the images?
The original images are on our archive disc. I thought the best thing to do was to transfer these images into the computer and replace the old ones directly in the capture scratch folder. Could that work? I hope so otherwise I may lose my job. Any suggestions I’m desperate.

Don’t replace them. Firstly, how did you capture the original footage? What format is the archive?
The solution that comes to might be to use Media Manager to make an offline project, changing the settings to the correct SD settings (depends on what format the camera original shot).
Then you probably need to recapture from the archive. It is hard to know without knowing how you got the material in, and what the settings are on the captured clips and sequence you edited in.

this was shot using the Sony PMW 350 on SxS cards. normally the camera was set to SD mode 50i 720 x 576. First I copied the folder from the SxS cards onto our archive disc (copy paste), then I used the transfer window in FCP to get the images into the project. This I think, is where the problem is because apparently I left the capture setting on XDCAM HD.
I will have to check tomorrow what the clip formats are.
Still I thought I could (simply) create another project, use the transfer window in FCP to install the archive footage, replace these new clips with the old ones, if the new clips have the same names.
is it possible?
