    I believe that 9.1 Mbps is the maximum for video, to meet the specs. But most use 8Mbps to ensure compatibility, especially for lower-end DVD players.

    BTW, for maximum compatibility, even in NTSC-lands, it’s best to encode an NTSC DVD. PAL, DVD players are NTSC compatible but the converse is not true.
