I am looking for a way to encode video into an MPEG2 directly from my camera into my MacBookPro. The video I will be shooting requires no editing and I want to capture it as MPEG2 so that I can burn a DVD immediately and skip using a compressor program. (I run FCP6/Compressor) The reason I want to do this is I am shooting VERY lengthy events and the compression process will take up an enormous amount of time.

Am I better off buying a stand alone DVD writer? Is there a way to do this encoding on a PC? Is MPEG2 the ONLY codec to write a Standard DVD directly? These videos must be shot in 4:3 Standard Definition.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

    Thanks!

[Dave LaRonde] “Why don’t you simply hook your DV camera up to a DVD recorder and be done with it?”

    thats the only working option.

unless you get a stand alone pc/mac (non notebook) with a dedicated
mpeg2 encoder card, but then again you have to author it.

much better to do it all in machine with a dvd-recorder as Dave suggests.

The panasonic E model recorders can be had pretty cheap on ebay now.
they have great build quality and reliability. one of my recorders
has over 3,000 recording hours on it and it still works.

Then just pick up a DVD recorder and feed your camera / audio directly in. That’s the easiest and they are at or under $100 in most stores now. that’s your cheapest option.
