Encoding Time – HDV vs AVCHD
I’ve been recording to tape via a Canon HV30, uploading to HHD, editing, then encoding. The HV30’s obviously record in HDV. m2t format. I have been able to encode a 30 minute video in about 35 mins at 720 x 480 x 1500kbps WMV. And encode a 320 x 240 x 500kbps WMV version in 10 minutes.
I’ll spare you my computer specs as I don’t yet think they’re relevant to this question just yet.
I recently bought two Sony Camcorders that record in AVCHD. Rather than firewire the content onto my HDD, the convenience of copy/paste was nice. And it appears the file size is about half of m2t which again, is nice.
Anyway, I edited my vid. Everything going well. The files have an m2ts extension. Again, it’s a 30 minute video but the encoding time for the 720 x 480 x 1500 kbps WMV took 3.5 hours. I chocked that up to just the way it’s going to be with the new file type. But, then I encoded the 320 x 240 x 500kbps WMV version and it also took 3.5 hours to encode.
Is this just the way it’s going to be or am I doing something glaringly wrong?
To add insult to injury, when I take the larger WMV file and, using a third party software, try to convert it to a bit rate 400 kbps mp4 file, it actually makes the final file about 20% LARGER than the 1500kbps wmv file. This is more of a side questions if you happen to know the answer. 🙂
You can probably tell I’m fairly ignorant about this stuff so I apologize in advance if the solution is obvious and I just didn’t see it or if I’m using the wrong terminology. But any help you can offer would be appreciated.
Thanks.
