I shall post this in the DVDSP & “compression techniques” section too.

I’ll make this simple and easy… my DVD’s look like crap. I can’t figure out what i’m doing wrong. I use compressor at the highest bit-rate possible. Used to do 2 passes, but it looked just as bad as 1, so decided to just stick w/one. My crossdissolves are “sticky”, and unless you’re watching it on a small screen, a lot of the detail is lost and you can just tell it’s a ‘homemade DVD’. Although I’ve never received any complaints from my clients, it really bugs me. My videos are usually around an hour long. If someone wants to share their secrets for the settings in compressor, I’d be eternally grateful. If it helps to know, I’m using a G5, w/FCP studio. My videos always originate as DV brought in through firewire except for the situation below…

Ok so this is a 2 part question… secrets to downconverting HDV footage in compressor? anyone? Everytime I tried it looked like the field order got messed up, or the quality was just completely obliterated. Yes, I know downconverting won’t look as good as HD, but it should at least look as good as SD! Any secrets to unlock this mystery would be super helpful! Thanks!

I’ve never had a quality problem with Compressor to DVD files. I always use the presents, like 4:3 120 minute fastest or best. I have had the same sucess with HDV down converting to SD DVD. No field issues. Perhaps DVD Studio Pro is re-encoding the footage for you and doing a bad job? Presuming your are using DVD Studio Pro. Try to play the Compressor output video in DVD Studio Pro and see if looks bad there (or play it in something else to check if Compressor is the problem or your DVD burning software.)

How do I know if DVDSP is re-encoding it??? I don’t think it is because it only takes about 10-15 minutes to build the Video_TS file.

    Look in Preferences> Encoding.
What compressor settings are you using?
