  • Encoding h.264 mov or mp4 beyond 4k and 8k

We have some clients who are showing their video on huge screens and are requesting encodes at massive resolutions. The largest so far being 13600×768 and 3840×3240.

We are rendering from After Effects. Either as ProRes, Uncompressed or QT Animation. I’m currently trialling software that can make these huge h.264s but they often crash or fail to start at all. The closest i’ve got is with IFFMPEG (GUI for FFMPEG on mac) but although the encodes play in VLC they are pure white or black when opened in QT or MPEG Streamclip which wont work for the client.

We have a budget for some software that can do this and we arent able to use FFMPEG on the command line as the team who will be making the encodes aren’t used to encoding.

Has anyone used any software that can handle this? I’ve contacted Sorenson and Telestream support but havent had anything back. I’ve also tried Media Encoder, Carbon Coder and OGG video.

    Hope someone can help.

    Thanks,
    Jonny

Maximum H.264 resolution is 4096×2304. Try encoding your videos at allowable dimensions such as 4096×231 and 2731×2304 to see if that is the root cause.

Thanks Ivan. I was hoping for some kind of hack that would allow any resolution. Will keep looking!

    Cheers,

    Hey Jonny,

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I’m currently working on a project that needs a 6480×1920 video in an .mp4 format and keep it around 5gb. I’m testing out various setting with Handbrake, but I’m curious if you have found a better way to do this?
