  • Enabling “trillions” in Apple 10bit Codecs

Posted by Steve Drew on August 16, 2005 at 5:08 am

Previously the Blackmagic 10bit codec was able to render in Trillions of colours from After Effects.
Now, since the whole FCP5/Tiger/BMD5 upgrade we are begrudgingly left with only the Apple Uncompressed 10bit codec and it seems only able to render in Millions of colours. Is this true or do we need to “hotwire” the codec like we used to for the BMD one a while back.

    Thanks in advance!

Missing the good old days of reliable gamma and high colour depth,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,

You should be able to render trillions of colors with the latest Apple codec included with Final Cut Pro HD 5.0.2. After adding your After Effects project to the render queue, click on the blue “lossless” and then click on “Format Options” and set it to “Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2” which is Apple’s codec. You should now be able to render to trillions of colors.

    Hi Luke,
Yep, been doing that – the only option from the drop down box is Millions.
Should it be different? That means strange things are a-foot at the Circle-K….

    Any ideas?

    Hi Steve,

Here’s a possibility. I wonder if you installed After Effects after installing the DeckLink drivers? If so, this might explain your problem and the solution would be to simply uninstall and reinstall the latest DeckLink drivers. Does this help to make the Trillions option appear?

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for your good news and I hope you’ve worked out how to release CAPS Lock 😉

Based upon your question, I have created a technical note named Trillions of Colors in After Effects as I’m sure other DeckLink users will encounter this scenario occasionally.

Watch out… there is a big bug in the new FCP 10bit codec (2.0). When you switch your AE project to 16bit you will get some garbage in your 10bit source footage. I recommend going back to the old BM codec. BM, Apple, and Adobe on the case.
