emergency, capture issue, problem with data on tape, can it be recovered?
One camera’s tape from an important job cannot be captured into FCP. The window that pops up says that there is a problem reading the data on the tape. Is there any way to recover this tape? I can see the video on a monitor. I have tried copying it over firewire but I get the same capture problem. I need this video any suggestions?

Try an ANALOG (S-video or Component) dub to another tape, and then capture that dub.
The quality should be just fine and it may save the problem tape’s clips. -
Also, try using “capture now” after setting the capture window from “Firewire device” to “non-controllable device” in the capture window.
then rewind your tape, and hit play. Odds are that there is a bad frame, or messed up timecode on the tape.
If you need to stay timecode accurate, then you can modify the clips’ timecode after capturing it, and then you will still have a TC accurate recording of the tape.

I had the same problem and used capture now to get some of the video into FCP, however I still got the error message and not all of the video could be captured.
Just out of curiosity, what camcorder and type of tape was the problem tape shot on? My problem tape was shot on a Canon H1 in DV mode (TDK DV tape). Subsequent captures using DVCam tape shot on a Sony DSR 450 were not problematic.

It was panasonic master tape in a VX 2000 camera. On the same shoot my Panasonic 100B and the PD150 with the same tape had no problems. It appears to be a camera problem.

Thank you I have sent the tapes to sony media services, but I had thought that if they were unable to make me a copy that could be captured I would copy to Beta and then back. It was helpful to get your input.

Thank you, I did try that. At this moment I have sent the tape to sony media services. If they cannot make me a copy that can be captured I will try making a copy anolog and then copy that back to dv or something along those lines. What do you think?

The last time I put a TDK tape in my DSR-20, I had to have the unit professionally cleaned.

Thank you . That sounds as though that could be a possibility. I let someone use the camera and although I put a cleaning tape in it just in case she had used cheap tape that could be the issue. I made an analog copy of the tape using s cable and now it appears to be capturing it.
