Yesterday I was cutting a very simple project with photos & music & 1 DV clip. I saved it, & when I try to open it (or any FCP project) the app fails to open. It gets as far a “choose a setup” window & hangs. If I click on anything in the Window I get the Mac beep tone.

I trashed prefs, ran Disk Utility repair perms, Disk Warrior, and yes I even reinstalled FCP 7. (The authorized retail version.) Nothing works.

This is for my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah slideshow TOMORROW at 5pm!!!!!
I’ll work all night if I can get it up & running. Thanks!!! ~ Steve

You could try creating a new user under System Preferences > Accounts. Log out of your regular user account and log back in to the newly created account, then try to launch FCP.

I just tried logging in under different admin. All that does is allow the program to boot as far as the default “Choose Setup” window, again… only this time it does not make the Beep sound when I click OK.

That’s the only difference. It’s still hanging. I can only shut it down with Force Quit….

How about cleaning the system caches with a utility like Onyx?

Never heard of it. I used Disk Warrior. Is Onyx freeware? Does it do anything different than Warrior or Utility? thnx

    [Steven Austin] “Is Onyx freeware?”

Yes. There are also other similar tools like AppleJack.

[Steven Austin] “Does it do anything different than Warrior or Utility?”

It’s completely different. Disk Warrior rebuilds directories, and Disk Utility resets permissions. Onyx resets a bunch of temporary files, including the system caches, font caches, system logs, etc.

This is one of my first troubleshooting steps for mysterious system behavior.

I used Onyx and it seems to be working, although the time it takes to get from the Choose Setup window to the timeline is pretty slow. Thanks for the tip!

Well, that was more than a tip.
    You can open FC.
So now is when you must do the rest of the routines: Permissions and DiskWarrior.
