Embedding captions in mp4
Hi all,
Question regarding captioning. I edit videos that require captioning and my company has just moved from Vegas to Premiere Pro CC. The client needs the videos to play in Windows Media Player, however, my research leads me to believe Premiere only embeds captions into quicktime files. I’ve been asked to render files as mp4’s and I’m wondering what the best way to go about this is?
I’ve tried exporting as mov with captions embedded, then bringing that back into Premiere and rendering as mp4, but the captions don’t transfer. My understanding was if they were embedded they should be part of the video. Am I mistaken? Is this a distinction between captions and subtitling?
I’m trying to utilize scc files to get around having to manually subtitling the whole project. That was one of the reasons we switched to Premiere in the first place. We do a lot of videos and we need a speedy workflow. So I’m asking a couple of things I suppose:
– Can I embed subtitles into an mp4?
– If captions are embedded into the mov, why don’t they display when I import said mov back into premiere?Thanks for reading and I appreciate any advice.

Are you asking about burning the captions in as permanently-visible subtitles in the encoded movie, or are you asking about keeping regular text closed captions for players that support them?

When I say embed I mean burning the captions into the video so they are always visible. The getting the sidecar files to associate with the video file in a player is beyond my knowledge at the moment, so I figure it’s easier to just have them burnt in.

I don’t think that’s possible directly in Premiere, but it sure seems like a logical feature request.
There’s a commercial plugin called EZTitles, maybe that will help — I haven’t used it.
Otherwise, you can burn in subtitles with VirtualDub and TextSub (part of VobSub). You may need Subtitle Edit to convert the sidecar files to a subtitle format that VirtualDub/TextSub can read. All these tools are free.
