  • Embedding a multicam clip in compound clip loses sync

I’m new to FCP X, so perhaps I’m attempting something ill-advised.

I have some interviews that we shot with two cameras that we were unable to sync timecode on, so instead ran time of day on both for a rough sync. So I create a multicam clip and adjust the sync manually and everything looks good.

Separately, I’ve created a compound clip where I have synced the A camera video footage with our external audio. Looks and sounds good.

Now, I need to get that multicam clip synced with the audio. I opened my compound clip (audio synced to A cam) and replaced my A cam video with the multicam clip. That works, and now my A cam in the multicam clip is synced with the audio, but B cam is now longer synced with the A cam.

    Any ideas or guidance?

I guess I am confused why you use a compound clip.

Do both cameras have the same or similar audio? Do you have double system audio?

Why not add the audio as an angle in the multicam clip and sync everything to the audio?

The original problem I posted about turned out to be an error on my part, my apologies.

In regards to adding audio as an angle in the multicam clip, what is the advantage? I have two cameras with similar audio and a third external recording.

You can sync all three of them, use the external audio as the master, and then add all of them as a multiclip to your Project. Multiclips perform better than compound clips and they allow an “at a glance” view of syncing and allow you to add more angles to sync if you need to at any time.

    This is the multicam setup:
