ElGato Turbo.264
Posted by Rob Grauert on April 27, 2012 at 12:28 pmHi,
Does anyone know if the Turbo.264 provides better results than Compressor alone, or is it just an accelerator?
Thanks 😀

April 27, 2012 at 1:09 pmI find it just accelerates. But it doesn’t work inside Compressor. You use the Elgato app to encode

April 27, 2012 at 3:16 pmI haven’t used the HD version, but I do have the original which I used quite a bit on G4 and G5 system. It made h.264 encoding real-time on those systems.
I never liked the results as much as the ones I got from compressor, but they were fine for working with remote producers. There were a few more artifacts and less detail in the darks which the original Elegato seemed to crush.
The HD version seems to be much more customizable than the the original, but I get quite a bit better than real-time encoding on my intel machine and for my workflow I only encode at night, lunch, or break time anyway so I haven’t looked into speeding up the process recently.

April 27, 2012 at 3:27 pmMatrox is better. Because it works inside Compressor, you can modify settings and tweak quality. Elgato Turbo only had presets that you can tweak a little.
Even with basic presets, the Matrox is better.

April 27, 2012 at 5:18 pmWhat about portability? To get access to the Matrox on a laptop, u have to have a mxo2 mini, tethered to power. Is elgato worthit for preview on site work that just needs done quickly and can be ok with lower quality?
