Element 3D pixelated texture
Posted by Paul Kamuf on September 1, 2020 at 6:42 pmHi,
I have an object created in c4d and am mapping text on to it using Element 3D. The text is crisp in the text layer and in the pre-comp. Once it is applied to the model as a custom texture map it gets pixelated. I tried upping the resolution of the model. I adjusted the sampling and I adjusted the Preferences->texture map size.

September 1, 2020 at 11:28 pmHowdy Paul!
I can’t test this at the moment, but most of my weird problems with E3D come down to scale. I’m not sure if this applies to your particular issue, but I always add a null that I link every 3D component to (element group nulls, lights, camera, etc.), then scale it so it fits within the “world” – meaning your top and front views. If your scene is really small, you might need to scale it up, and if it’s too big (probably not the case here, but it will definitely affect AO and shadows) you need to scale it down.
Now, the other thing is your screenshot is from the E3D GUI, and there’s a switch there for “use draft textures” – is that on or off? Also, what size if your texture map? The preferences setting is for the max size of the texture maps (I believe) and doesn’t actually have an effect on the size of your texture map itself.

September 2, 2020 at 12:28 pmThanks for the reply! The texture layer is 5000×3000. The scene layer is 1920×1080. Draft textures is off. I have tried a few things with scale but will try a few more.
Thanks again

September 2, 2020 at 2:59 pmsometimes too “big” can be just as bad as too small. set your texure to 1920 and set to uv mapping on the model

September 2, 2020 at 8:17 pmHi,
Thanks for the reply. The texture mapping was set to Planar YZ. When I change it to UV I am unable to see the texture (text layer). It seems that perhaps the map is way too big? When I adjust the UV offset the entire object appears white (the text color) or black (the background).
I changed the size of the object (c4d file) and the size of the text layer (texture map) but it doesn’t seem to make a difference to UV mapping.
Seems like a scale issue, but I don’t see where this is happening or could be adjusted. Please let me know if you have any thoughts
Thanks,

September 2, 2020 at 11:25 pmHmm… if you can’t see the texture when you switch to UV mapping, there might be an issue with your UVs, or maybe your normals are inverted? You can turn on “draw backfaces” for the material and see if that helps.
If you’re able to send the project file and assets I’ll take a look.

September 2, 2020 at 11:31 pmOh – what happens if you play with UV repeat instead of UV offset? Like crank it up to 10 or 100 in both directions.
