Element 3D
If I create type that is tracked into a shot in 2D for client approval, can that type be “promoted” into Element 3D with properties after the fact? I don’t have Element 3D yet and wanted to just get the basic type into the shots for approval….if they liked it we may not go 3D but if it really wants to be 3D, how easy is it to promote AE type into Element with perspective properties etc?
Or better yet, what is the workflow to go from AE type to Element 3D?

Quick answer is that E3D works directly with Text. Trying to translate something done in 2D into E3D might be problematic though with the way 3D space is used.
My suggestion if you haven’t done so already is to snag some of Andrews earlier E3D tuts over on VideoCoPilot.com. He’ll touch on a number of basic things & pitfalls that aren’t easy to find trying to read any docs.

Maybe Element 3D is not what I was thinking….is there another simpler 3D type tool for AE that just does simple extrusions? In most of the Element 3D tutorials he is building an entire city! I just really need to extrude type in AE and track it in a shot.
Thoughts?

There is; just look up Extruding text for your version of AE. I still use CS6.
But that’s largely I was suggesting the earlier tuts, which are hard to find with the way their sites arranged now, but they assume you’ve seen the earlier ones.

I recommend using the CINEMA 4D renderer in this case, too. There’s just one step missing from the GSG tutorial. That’s Step 17: Brace yourself for slower renders.
Once you switch to Ae’s CINEMA 4D renderer, you’re using a full 3D renderer, and your render times will increase noticeably. (E3D is more limited but much faster than C4D for rendering.) The results are well worth it, but plan accordingly.
