Here is a link that reports success with the proper graphics card in a 2012 Tower.

Realistically, so much has been improved upon since mid-2012 that aside from using it as a server or a basic use mac, you’d be better off investing in a new iMac with RAID vs putting any more money into an old tower.

Presumably Apple’s lists would be based on the stock GPU included with that machine as supplied by Apple. So if it’s GPU-based, a newer card might have success. We’ll see when there are some apps optimized for Metal.

This just in from Izotope which I know a lot of you are using in some form or other:
“As many Mac users are aware, Apple recently released OS X 10.11, El Capitan. At this time, we strongly recommend that customers using iZotope products postpone their upgrades to 10.11.
Our engineering teams are actively testing and qualifying the final release version of El Capitan, and are working to address known issues.”
