[daniel jacobs] “Why does my effects window turn black?”

What are your system / QT specs?

[daniel jacobs] “How can I import a jpeg without it shrinking?”

Check your import settings – options in the import dialog box

    Hi Jon:
Thanks for responding to my post.

Jpeg: My image import settings are
    “don not resize smaller images,
    Computer RGB (0-255)
    ordered for current format
    invert on import”

Black effects windows: I’m not sure what QT specs are.

    I like your Whitman quote.

What is the original size of your jpegs? If they’re larger than your project resolution than you need to use the Pan and Zoom plugin to maintain their original size (and pan/zoom across them, if you want).

Also, change your import settings from “Invert on Import” to “None”. That’s for your Alpha channel, and jpeg files don’t carry an alpha.

Regarding the black effects window – I’m not sure what you mean. Can you post a screen grab of what it’s doing? If you’re not seeing the effects, make sure you have “Render on the fly” checked. It under one of the menus (I can’t remember which right now and I’m not in front of an Avid).

    Hi Michael:
    Thanks for your response.
The jpegs vary in size from + or – 2.6 MB to + or – 5.8 MB. The project res is DV 25 411 MXF
I’m not sure what you mean by using the pan and zoom plug in and panning across them.

    Effects window:
When I open the window it is normal.
When I double click on an effect or effects folder, the windows go black. if I click on a the window again I can then read only the effect or effect folder I click on.

    Thanks again for your help.

Open Quicktime, and see what version you are running. It should match what the readme recommends. It may not be your problem, but I’ve seen some relly weird things happen with the wrong QT version.

It’s also important to know what your system specs are: OS, memory, video card. It may not be related, but again, it’s good to rule out the basics.

    Quicktime is 7.6.4

    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Video Card: NIvidia GeForce 9400M
    Nividia GeForce 9600MGT

I read the read me, but can’t seem to find it again. I’m on the trial plan right now. Took the Avid class in Tewksbury last week. It’s a great program. I’m getting a lot of ticks I’m able to figure out, but these ones have been real thorns.

    Thanks.

Make sure your NVidia driver is right – Avid has gotten better but can be really tricky if you don’t have the right combo of driver, quicktime and OS. I’m thinking your black window is a driver issue…

I checked out that link and downloaded the suggested driver, but nothing changed with the screens. Is there anything else you think it may be?
