Effects not rendering correctly Vegas Pro 10
Posted by Vince Diamante on April 1, 2011 at 2:53 pmI’m editing my short film.
I’m using Sony Vegas Pro 10 64bit.
The footage is 1080 24p AVCHD shot on a Panasonic HMC 150.
I do have some pre-keyed effects clips in 29.97fps, and also some footage shot 59.96.Final delivery is online.
Everything in the timeline is just how I want it, and when I scrub through, it’s all good.
When I render out, I’m having serious problems that are driving me insane.
Random screw ups like muzzle flares not lining up properly, or effects just completely not showing up in the final render, keep happening everytime I render out.
I go back and “fix” it back to normal, try to render out again, and sure enough, other effects will now render out incorrectly, even though they were fine before.
I’ve tried rendering to different settings, codecs, formats, and nothing is working out.
I’m having the best luck with .WMV 1280×720 at 24fps.
I wanted to render to 1080,
At this point I just want something that looks good.I’ve been trying to render this film for over a week and nothing is working.
Any ideas on what I’m doing wrong? Or could do differently?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is your project set to?
Are you using the 59.96 footage for slow-motion special effects? If not, have you disabled resample on those clips so that Vegas simply drops half of them (since you don’t need them)
It is very risky to do special fx work on mixed footage. I would have converted all of the footage into a single format (take your pick) and then there would have been no surprises.
Are all of these clips at different frame rates at the same resolution? or are the resolutions mixed too?

Hi John,
Thanks for the quick reply and trying to help me out.
Yes, the resolutions are different as well. The fx clips are in 720p.
It was my understanding that Vegas was designed to be able to handle different frame rates and resolutions in the same project and on the same Time line. Based on your response, it sounds like this is incorrect.
My project settings are set to match the 1080 AVCHD footage. Again, I was under the impression that in Vegas your project settings have no effect on the rendering settings.
The 59.96 is being used for a few slo-motion shots. There are only a few of these, and these shots have actually been rendering out perfectly. The problems keep appearing where i have layered a 29.97fps vfx shot over a 24fps AVCHD shot.
It’s as if someone went into the Pan/Crop window and moved all my keyframes around.
Thanks again for the quick reply and any more advice you may have.

That is not incorrect. I’m just trying to understand what you are expecting Vegas to do, as well as help you understand what Vegas needs to do in order to meet your demands. Part of that is synthesizing frames on-the-fly to match frame rates as you playback the timeline. Under normal conditions this is not a problem. BUT… If you are aligning special effects with pixel perfect accuracy on frames that don’t even exist, then you are expected a lot for the convenience of not having to conform all of your footage (which is why other NLE’s just make you conform all of your footage). So it works… within limits.
[Vince Diamante] “My project settings are set to match the 1080 AVCHD footage. Again, I was under the impression that in Vegas your project settings have no effect on the rendering settings.”
True up to a point… Your project settings have everything to do with how you see things, which has everything to do with how you line up special FX, and if that doesn’t match what you are rendering, you will see things go out of alignment. Which is exactly what you are experiencing. (which is why I’m asking the question)
[Vince Diamante] “The problems keep appearing where i have layered a 29.97fps vfx shot over a 24fps AVCHD shot. “
This is what I expected to find. Your VFX are changing frame rates and thus the frames don’t line up when rendered because the frames never existed to begin with.
I would take the 29.97fps VFX shots and render them to 24p. Then drop them into your 24p project and line up the vxf again and things should stay exactly as you want them when you render. Also, keep your project and render properties the same (but I think you did that already).

April 2, 2011 at 12:00 amOk, cool, That actually makes a lot of sense. When these glitches first started happening, the frame rate conversion crossed my mind, but for some reason I dismissed it thinking it must be something else.
I’m going to convert the fx clips to 24 like you suggested and it sounds like everything should straighten our.
Thanks again

Please let us know if this fixes the problem. I don’t want to be recommending things that don’t work but it seems like it should. Good luck Vince.

April 3, 2011 at 8:42 amYes an No.
Yes – it did fix the current problem of the muzzle flares not lining up properly.
No – sure enough, now a new problem showed up in this render. 3 full clips did not render out. The audio is there, but the screen goes black for a few seconds.
I double checked the project to make sure everything was fine, and it was. I shut down Vegas & rebooted. Rendered another file.
Once again, a completely different part of the final render went completely blank. The audio is there, but no video.
So I’m back to my original issue, I fix one problem, render out, only to find a new problem. These last 2 problems seem to be un-related to any FX clips.
I’m seriously at a loss.
I’m thinking about taking my last 2 renders and combining them on a new timeline using the sections that worked and doing a final render from there, but I will be recompressing video that has already been compressed.
I’m really not sure what to do.

April 3, 2011 at 10:04 pmAnd the plot thickens…..
So I tried rendering to mpeg-2, using the SD DVD architect 24p widescreen setting, and it rendered out just fine.
So it looks like whatever issues I’m having only happen when I try to render out to HD.

Could be a bug in Vegas Pro 10. Are you using the latest update Vegas Pro 10c? You might want to contact Sony support and see what they say.
