I’m using Final Cut Pro v 6.0.4 on an Intel Quad Core with 4GB of ram. I have two NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video cards, hooked up to 3 cinema displays (One 30 in, Two 23in).

When I try and add any built in video filter in Final Cut Pro (such as a vignette, or blur) I get a solid red screen with white letters saying, “The effect ‘[effect that I’m trying to use]’ failed to render: Your hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth.”

I’m editing XDCAM EX footage at 720p.

Any idea why this is happening?? I have an iMac that renders this stuff of XDCAM EX footage with now problem!

    Thanks for the help!

[Timothy Allen] “I have two NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video cards, hooked up to 3 cinema displays (One 30 in, Two 23in). “

That’s your problem. Pull one of the cards.

    Jeremy,

That worked. I unplugged the monitor from the second card, and presto! So what the alternative?? How to I setup three monitors on my machine and still be able to render effects?

    Appreciate the help!

Unfortunately right now, I don’t think there is an alternative. My guess is that since FCS2 is tied to the graphics card through fxplug, the system can’t figure out how to move the info between the two graphics cards.

You don’t have enough room between two 30s and a 23? Are you trying to create an IMAX experience of the FCP interface while editing in your studio 😉

What do you need all the monitors for? Maybe we can think of a different way to do things or perhaps you’re using a monitor in a way that can be handled differently.

Yar, and this totally blows. You may find, however, that Motion works just fine with up to 8 displays connected to your Mac’s display outputs. Might depend on the cards, dunno.

My Intel Macs have four cards in them (we got ripped off but that’s another rant) and it took us months to figure out why some FxPlugs worked in Motion but not in FCP.

It’s not actually the monitors, it’s trying to use more than one card that disables the Plugs in FCP. If you use one of those multi-head boxes (made by Matrox?) that uses one DVI output to feed two DVI displays you can hook up multiples. Umm, that’s what I’ve been told. I do not have on e of those boxes. Saw ads for them in the Mac magazines a few months ago.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
