Their loss for sure! Epson obviously have the complete market for low budget disc printers. Mine have served me well (on my second R200 and have two new R220s in the closet). When I can sell five DVDs and pay for a brand new printer I consider that a pretty good deal, plus the fact that I can print lots of full color discs on one set of generic ink. I know some of the people on the forum have continuous ink systems on their printers and that’s even cheaper. Anyone that needs to produce mass quantities of discs at a time would probably need something different than the Epsons but for the average joe who prints no more than 10-20 at a time they’re great.

    Alan,
The biggest problem with “compatible” cartridges is that many of them aren’t. The electronic chip is the culprit more than the ink type.
Many times the printer won’t even recognize the good Epson cartridges with one of the “compatibles” installed. The Ebay “inkjet king 99” ones are particularly onerous…and forget about any guarantee, you’ll never see your money again from those guys.

The most reliable place I’ve found is think4ink. Their kits are truly compatible with Epson ones and they stand behind their products with a real guarantee. I have been using their inkjet replacements for years and haven’t had a dud yet (no, I don’t work for them…just a satisfied customer).
Buy a couple of sets (or anything over $45) and they ship free.
    Hope this helps.

    Edward,

[jeditdv] “[Peter Wright] “Just for the record – Canon Printers do this too – I have an i865 and a Pixma iP4200.”

    Not in the US.”

The problem with Canon printing of DVDs in the US is not a matter of Canon’s choice but the result of an Epson Lawsuit claiming patent infringement. Most Canon printers and I believe all Pixmas are capable of DVD printing that is not enabled in the USA. It’s a 10-15 minute job and the ready purchase of a $20-25 CD/DVD tray on e-bay to enable this feature on these printers. I’ve used both Epson and Canon and believe me, the Canons are just as good, more reliable, and nearly twice as fast as the Epsons, plus Canon ink or compatibles are less as well. It’s more than worth the small hassle to go Canon for DVD printing.

    A quick Google found this:

….or this and you can even make a homemade tray:

    Thanks Ken
I’ll keep that in mind. No problem about touting a company you’re happy with. We all need to hear about both the good ones and bad ones.

    Hi,
I know there’s a lot of people out there suffering with the “Tray not aligned” error on the Epson printers.
Did a lot of digging, and found that Epson redesigned the tray. (Clear plastic strip replaced with integral leader) I got a new one, and so far it’s working perfectly, although it’s early days yet.

Had to re-do my Googling to find the info, but here is a link to a forum that explains what I found out by other means.

The post in question lists three dealers who have the replacement tray. I got mine from Compass Micro in Portland, OR for US$7.00 (approx).

Here’s the link to the page from Compass’s web site

For those of you in the UK, here’s a link to a place – cost is 9.99 pounds though, and I can’t vouch for them having the redesigned version.

    Hope this helps someone…
