Hi all, Just joined… been having a good look through the forum and will be making regular visits for sure now that I’ve just done my second shoot on the Varicam and am a big fan! :o)

So I’ve just got a question about playback from camera. We wanted to review a few takes on set from the tape we were currently shooting. On trying to play back to the 17″ HD monitor all we got was a grey screen and the same in the view finder but giving an error and flashing up ‘servo’ with the warning lights going off. We got out the 1200 deck and did playback through that ok so all good.

I’ve since looked into it and am going to check it on the particular camera tomorrow, but am I understanding correctly that if the HDSDI switch was in EE mode while recording we would not be able to do playback, that it has to be in PB/EE while shooting to be able to playback.

That seems to be what is explained in the following paragraphs at https://www.jkor.com/peter/riddles.html

    ……………………………
    (2) In the “EE” position, you will always output the highest possible level of video quality (10 bit). So again, this will not effect, or compromise, external monitoring or external recording in any way. However, recordings made via the camcorder’s onboard VTR can not be output by the camcorder during playback (nor seen in the viewfinder?).

For most applications, it is best to leave the selector switch set to the “PB/EE” position so you can perform “Record Reviews” and play back recordings to an external monitor (and also to see play back in the viewfinder). 10-bit external monitoring, and/or 10-bit external recording, is fully functional in this mode.

the servo warning on the often comes up when the playhead is beyond the TC on the tape.
