    I’m new to Resolve and I’m having EDL issues.

    I can get my EDL’s to work as a cut list, however that workflow just won’t cut it, as I often deal with shows that require

    I can’t get my EDL’s to connect to the clips from my media pool.

    I’ve tried the workflow from a previous post to the letter:

    “In FCP media manage your sequence then make an EDL with ‘EDL Notes – File Names’ checked.
    In Resolve make sure ‘Extract Reel Names from EDL Comments is on then set “Assist using reel numbers from the source clip file path name’ to */#R
    Add all your clips to the media pool – the reel column should show the file name.
    Load your EDL and grade the sequence then load the Master Session and Render in ‘Source’ mode.”

    I load the EDL, but the EDL will simply not connect. I get a sequence full of red X’s. I’ve tried a plethora of different settings and still, none of the clips connect. Am I missing something? I’ve gone through the manual several times as well.

    If it matters the current project I’m testing is all APR 422, converted from 5D & 7D footage.

    I tested the Render Out and Reconnect, and it worked, although some issues popped up. All the reel names were now “ROOT”
    Is there a way to force renders to use the source resolution?

    I often deal with shows that have 2nd or 3rd cameras with different resolutions or framerates, and one of the few nice things about Color was that during the reconnect, I would not be faced with the process of recreating any zooms, crops, moves, etc… that are often in the shows.

    In your message, “*/#R” should be “*/%R”

    If this doesn’t solve the problem for you, please send the exported project, EDLs, and screenshots of Browse/Config/Conform(one each for Master session and EDL selected) screen to our help address – davincihelp (at) blackmagic-design.com

    Yeah, maybe you are missing something.
    Like a proper EDL maybe.
    Do you have the possibility to put in online for us to have a look ?
    Also a dir print of your files would be helpful.
    If you are certain your timecodes exist, your media has the right names or Tape IDs and you either use Conform for a real EDL or Preconform for a notch EDL, I am very certain it will work.
    On the other hand I also second the request for reading ALE,XML or other more evolved editing lists from Avid or FCP.
    As far as I know , only Smoke does read those, recreates multi layer edits and keeps resizing.
    That would be kick ass to have in DaVinci, sure, I know another board people are longing for that too.

    I completely agree on the XML/ALE point. XML’s are much easier to deal with than EDL’s.

    To be clear, the EDL *is* loading, (ie. I see the cuts of the correct length inside Resolve) they’re just not connecting to any of the media in the media pool.

    Rohit, I’ll be sending an EDL over, here’s a sample:

    003 BL V D 002 00:00:00:00 00:00:00:02 01:00:02:21 01:00:02:23
    * EFFECT NAME: CROSS DISSOLVE
    * FROM CLIP NAME: MVI_9500_1.MOV

    004 BL V C 00:00:00:00 00:00:00:00 01:00:03:02 01:00:03:02
    004 9555 V D 020 00:00:21:11 00:00:23:13 01:00:03:02 01:00:05:04
    * EFFECT NAME: CROSS DISSOLVE
    * TO CLIP NAME: MVI_9555_1.MOV
    M2 9555 019.2 00:00:21:11

    I did see the still frames in the EDL but haven’t removed them yet as I didn’t see that as a cause of resolve not connecting to the media.

    My Media all has the correct names (as shown in “FROM CLIP NAME:”, and the reel names are just created from the clip name to allow for a proper Media Manage. (the media originally had no reel name as it was converted 5D/7D).

    Wiiieeerd. Same EDL, same project, just unclicked the “Assist Using Reel #’s” and it connected this time. I think the Assist was throwing it off. because my reel #’s weren’t linked to anything.

    However, the whole project isn’t working right quite right, half the clips aren’t linking up properly, but that’s just because EDL’s and speed changes doesn’t ever work right, and neither does any sort of sources with different framerates. That part I should have been expecting though.

    Yup. Looks like it’s back to EDL’s as cutlists to have any sort of sane workflow with most projects. Crap.

    It’s too bad, I really like the way the Media Pool works, and that grades propagate back to the pool. I guess I could just grade the shots one by one, render and reconnect in FCP, but then I lose the whole “Real-Time” aspect.

    The Reason your Render had ROOT reel names was probably due to the fact that your assist using reel names was wrong. If you tick the box that render the files in to reel names folders etc its will use ROOT as default if it can’t find original reel names.
