    HI COW!

Have a feature. We locked picture. We gave sound files to sound editor. We unlocked picture, made changes, now sound editor mad. And who can blame him.

Our show is complicated. 6 reels, 8 layers of video and 24 layers of audio. I want to export an EDL so I can use a service like http://www.editrace.com to compare my old timeline with my new timeline. But, no matter which flavor of EDL I choose, I’m only offered up to 4 tracks of audio on my edl?

I haven’t built a database in Cinema Tools in order to use it’s change notes tracking device. And I can’t figure out how I could retroactively built a database in Cinema Tools in order us any of its functionality. So, for now, Cinema Tools doesn’t seem to offer me any help.

    RECAP:

Need to generate change notes of show I’m working on.

The show has 8 layers of video and 24 layers of sound.

Need to create an EDL of show to generate change notes for sound editor. . EDL only lets me export 4 tracks of audio per edl.

What do I do? I need to convey changes that occur on all 24 layers of my show. What is the work around?

I suppose you can break up your sequence into six 4 track sequences using copy and paste. Make separate EDL’s for each. Then combine them in the audio software.

EDL’s were created for dealing with linear tape based edit suites. At the time the standard was created there were no commonly used VTR’s that could record more than 4 channels of audio.
You are dealing with a 1970’s protocol.

Editrace only deals with EDLs of a single track at a time.

I usually ask for a video EDL of the recut and compare that with the old video EDL. If you have spread the video over 8 layers, is the bottom layer the main video content? If so then use that layer for the EDL.

Editrace EDLs show blocks moved so it will allow the sound editor to work out the change of sync. If you were making changes to the audio, rather than just block changes then I would suggest making a new OMFi and PAYING the sound editor to compare the two manually with your comprehensive list of changes that you made.

Do a google search for “Virtual Katy”.

This was developed by the folks who did Lord of the Rings. They had an assistant named “Katy” who use to have to do exactly what your talking about. She too got tired of making the changes, so they created a “Virtual” Katy to do it automatically.

    Good luck.
