EDL from FCP to Avid Media Composer

Sorry about that. And sorry to say that the only reliable way to get an EDL from FCP to Avid would be with $500 software. http://www.AutomaticDuck.com PRO EXPORT.

Any reason you cannot find a place that grades in FCP or utilizes COLOR?

Hi Shane!
What if I import my film from a quicktime file uncompressed 10 bit to avid. The in the timeline I cut exactly on every cut of the edit, and then export that EDL as an EMX3600? The only thing I need is the cutting points for the grading. Would this work?

I don’t think that will work. Unlike a DaVinci which can take an Avid exported EDL and apply the cuts to a captured tape, the Avid itself doesn’t work that way….not in my experience. So I don’t think that would work. Because still, youd have the issue of AVID reading the FCP EDL…even the CMX3600 standard. VERY OLD dying format.

AFAIK, avid CAN read FCP EDL’s, CMX3600 is fine.
Since you only need the cutpoints (and perhaps dissolves), keep it simple!
Copy your sequence and get everyghing out but the cust.
(meaning, trash the audio, trash the effects (except for dissolves), replace custom transitions with dissolves of the same duration, and remove all other filters/color effects.

If you have nested clips, unnest them.

Your idea of having one clip and put all the edits in there is a good one, but probably not needed.

If all fails, Automatic Duck is a good one, but expensive for just one job.
Slightly cheaper is for the Avid house to have Recut, a program i’ve written to generate an EDL based on the ingested master. But since you already have all the cutpoints, i would spend an hour to get a working EDL. Should be possible, i’m sure.

Next time you’re on an Avid, check out the panScan effect, and use ‘subdivide effect’

This will razor an ingested tape according to the shots (offline from EDL) on top of it.

I will. I have the Avid software, but I guess I will need to capture a tape and get an EDL to test this out.

nah, just put ANY clip on V2,
put a few clips (or the same razored and re-ordered) on V1 under that, like you would get from an EDL. They can be offline, makes no difference.
Apply the PanScan to the V2 clip.
Go into the effect, open the actions triangle to get to more options, and press the second (subdivide effect).
You then have your original razored. Select all and remove the effect, and remove the V1 clips (not needed anymore)
