    Hi there,

Facing a peculiar problem here importing EDL’s from Avid to FCP 6.0.2. Wonder if anyone can help? I’m working on a project that’s being edited on Avid Adrenaline and needs to be conformed for a screening on FCP. The reason is that most of the film is shot on these brand new SI 2K cameras and the codec to view the footage at 2K resolution is only supported in FCP/ Premiere Pro.

I’ve imported an EDL from Avid into FCP, import works fine, the sequence opens up and the cut points are in the right places. However once I reconnect the media FCP takes the wrong in and out points for the clips!
In the browser window FCP has the wrong information for Duration, In, Out, Media start and end. It’s bizarre because the same EDL conformed perfectly in Premiere.

FCP connects to the right clip (when manually pointed to the correct file path) but takes random media start and end points.

    Any leads? Thanks!

    Hi

For what you want to do, an EDL is just too underpowered, and FCP treats EDLS differently that Premieire.

You need to try a program called Automatic Duck. MAybe someone here could run a test for you to see if it works.

If you have more time than money, you could also digitize the output from avid, and line up the shots by eye. I know its not the most elegant solution, but when you work with EDLs in FCP, its only slightly more advanced than stone knives and bear skins.

    hope this helps

Thanks for that! Very helpful. I did notice that the Media Start in all cases is wrong. It should be 00:00:00:00 for all the clips. If i manually change all the start times to 00 in the browser the clips take the correct in and out points.

Do you know of any way to do that without having to manually change all the settings?

    Thanks,
    Udayan

    Hi

I am confused. are you talking about the media start? or the In?

You cnat change the media start as FCP gets this from the media you can change the in and out, as well as clear them, just by right clicking on the number

It sounds like what is happening is that the Avid edl is not reflecting the real time code value of the media ie the ins and outs seem to be file starts rather than timecode. Maybe the Avid export was set to reflect File times rather than Source TimeCode. If this is the case, then a new EDL form avid might fix everytting

    hope this helps

    Hi Bob,

The EDL has the correct In and Out AFTER i manually rest the Media Start to 00:00:00:00. The EDL has the wrong Media Start numbers when i import it into FCP.

All media should start at 00:00:00:00. Once i make the change and reconnect media it reflects the edit correctly. Is there a way to ensure that the EDL from AVID has the Media Start as 00:00:00:00? Is that what you mean by source time code?

    Thanks,
    Udayan

hi there, i use the Avid edl to FCP allt he time and it works fine for me. The difference is recapture the clips, rather than reconnecting exsisitng material. So that could be an option for you.

Also have you tried other EDl formats. I use CMX3600, but there are loads of others, GVG etc so try a few, it might make a difference.
    cheers

    Hey udayan

I dont know wahts going on between the avid and FCP. as you said it was solid state 2k files, its all pretty new territory to all of us (i am still doing stuff of DV tape!)

However, If you found a way to work around the problem you should do taht. I tried making media offline and changing the Media start, but as soon as i re connected the source media, it chamged back to waht it was.

The guy who developed Automatic Duck knows all bout these issues, so he took taht into account when developing the product, which is why it works pretty well :
