  • EDL & aspect ratio – please help

Hi guys, this is my first post. i have been editing a project with a mate of mine, and we realized that some of the footage was brought into FCP with the wrong aspect ratio. certain shots are super squashed so that even within the 16:9 frame, there are black bars at the top and bottom. we figured we could start editing and use an EDL to reimport the footage at the right aspect ratio later. now we’re actually ready to do it, we’re having problems. we can change the aspect ratio, but it’s not correct. the whole project comes out in 4:3 no matter what we try. we’ve already done a big chunk of editing now, it’s too late to turn back. we’ve read through the book over and over but still can’t seem to get it right. if anyone could offer any help we’d be most grateful. thanks!

What is the source footage? What deck? There are alot of variables.

That’s a lot of extra work to do something simple. All you really need to do is to select the master clip in the browser or viewer, press command-9 to open up the item properties window, & then change the aspect ratio in the format tab.

you wont need to redigitize or import anything. Whether it was brought in 4:3 or 16:9, you can change it afterwards, either change clip by clip as suggested above, or select the clips you want to change in the browser, scroll along to the anamorphic heading and you can change them all at once. If they dont change in the timline, then, in the timeline, double click a clip that is wrong, go to ‘Distort’ part of the motion menu, and change the aspect setting there, it should be ‘0’, or ‘33.33’ depending which way the image is stretched. You can then paste attribures to all the other clips in the timline that are wrong.
