EDL adds a frame to all Out points

because OUT on an EDL refers to the frame AFTER where FCP notes it as the frame you’re currently on. Just a nomenclature difference…. and confusing as heck until I figured it out.

EDL’s are an invention from the linear days, where the out point on the EDL represented the first frame NOT recorded. If you’ve never worked with a linear system, then this won’t make much sense to you, but if you’ve ever done an “old school” on-line, it makes complete sense.

THe other “gotcha” in this process is determining exactly what frame is represented by the “blue line” or cursor. The Avid has a second lighter line that give you a hint as to what frame is represented when you’re parked. FCP does not, and you need to understand that if you’re marking an out by typing a number, it really should be one frame later than you think.

Trap for young players. An EDL of course marks the beginning of frames so of course it displays the beginning of the frame after the out point as explained.

EDLs were designed to be read by machines so don’t expect them to look friendly to humans.
