EDITSEARCH, ENDSEARCH effect on Timeline for FCP capture
I apologize in advance if this is an elementary question but I’ve been unable to locate an answer and need to shoot footage for a documentary project tomorrow. I’d been told that the best way to avoid timeline issues when capturing for FCP is, simply, never review film or rewind the tape in the camera because, then, the timeline starts @ zero the next time you press start and this creates problems when capturing.
If one uses the EDIT SEARCH or ENDSEARCH functions, does that eliminate the problem and allow one to review etc. Or does it still start the next time the START button is pushed.

The problem with tape is going past the end of your recording. If you do, the next recording restarts the timecode at zero. If you use endsearch, it should pick up the timecode and continue.
However, do a test to make sure the timecode is continued. You will see in the viewfinder if the timecode jumps back to zero. As an added precaution after doing and endsearch, let the camera pre roll for five seconds before action as it might flag as a timecode break.

I really appreciate the explanation 🙂 I think I don’t fully understand why that 5 seconds is required and what it accomplishes or avoids when capturing but at least I know what to do and watch for during the shoot.

Roll an extra 5 seconds of footage @ the head and tail of every shot to avoid running out of control track When you play/review/stop and record again.
