Edits in an AAF in Resolve
We are a small post production company using DaVinci Resolve 8.1 to grade 5 half hour television episodes a week.
We use the AAF round trip to prepare media for grading and then render out of Resolve back into Avid for playout to tape.
Once we have an AAF in Resolve, it seems unable to make edit changes to this AAF? This means that any VFX shot or edit changes require a separate AAF import or a render out of DaVinci that we can then reassemble in Avid.
Is this the intended functionality of the AAF Roundtrip? It seems slightly odd that the ability to make edit changes is missing from the AAF but included in the XML Round Trip?
Are we doing something wrong?

Are you talking about the timeline in the Conform tab? I can edit there just fine, although the tracks are locked by default. Make sure you click on the lock icon next to the track label (“V1”, etc) to unlock it.
Or am I misunderstanding?

Sorry I should have clarified.
We can place whatever we want in Resolve, but then exporting the AAF does not add any of the edit changes or clip replacements when we reimport that AAF into Avid.
The render out of DaVinci does include the extra clips, it just does not translate into our exported AAF

AAF and XML are not the same things, you probably already knew that.
In Apple COLOR, we could not make changes to the XML-round trip timeline without opening the door to errors. The difference with Resolve is that DaVinci has the ability to generate and export a new XML which can be opened in Final Cut, or any other application that can see the XML. COLOR relied on revising the original XML which was created in FCP.
The AAf round trip for Resolve is not intended to be editable. You can do it at your own risk.
I recently finished a series where the revisions and FX imbeds were nearly constant.
I ended up exporting Target-mode complete shows, which, aside from the odd “flop” geometry needing to be corrected, or a missing clip that had been mis-connected in the original, worked out fine.It would be great if the project migration between all these applications was seamless and continuously and forever editable, but given the reality that most of these software constructs are Russians trying to speak Japanese to Italians, I’m grateful that it works at all, most of the time.
