Editor / Color Corrector?
Posted by Tyler Leisher on September 7, 2008 at 8:28 pmHey everyone, I’m a director/producer who has been editing his own stuff up until now. I’m looking to step back and stop editing so that I can let my editor do his job. But, who is responsible for color correcting, syncing audio with video, etc?
Should my editor be doing all of this, or should I Hire a specific guy to sync the audio, to color correct, etc?

September 7, 2008 at 8:49 pmThat all depends. The answer is seldom set in stone. There are many variables to consider such as: budget, the abilities of your editor, and perhaps the hardware and software he/she is working on. What type of “stuff” do you do?
At the highest levels, each phase of a job is handled by specialists. So, color correction is most often done by a person who does nothing but color correction. However, as there are many levels of work in this field and more and more is being done by editors all the time.
Syncing audio is typically done by an assistant editor, but editors do this as well, again usually depending on the project and the budget.

Depends on the gig and the budget. We do all of our own color correction in house with the editor doing all of the work. Either with FCP’s 3Way CC tool or Color. We use Color on all of our broadcast work and feature film work.
For sound design, we’ll do our own sound design for corporate work. All broadcast goes out of house to a sound designer that runs ProTools and Logic.
Editors should know how to do color grading for broadcast. It’s rare you have the budget and time to send that out to an outside house unless you really need a lot of work done. I do work with other editors and Producers exclusively in Color Grading on projects where they send me the drives and I send the project back to them.
Sound Designing, really good sound design, is best done by an artist who specializes in sound.
