  • Editing xdcam ex1 footage and FCP 6.0.4

    Hey All,

I am new to this forum in hopes to finding some answers to editing xdcam footage. I have shot some xdcam ex1 1080p24 footage which I am editing on my Mac. My mac specs are

    – 2 x 2.66Ghz dual core
    – 8 GB Ram

I am running into some problem with filters and transitions. I add the 3-way color corrector and a cross dissolve between 2 shots; however the playback on my computer screen is crappy. What would cause this? I have set the render sequences option to ProRes.

I normally shoot weddings and corporate videos so I am switching between 1080p24 and 720p60. Is it better to edit the footage natively or go ProRes 422?

    Thanks

FCP playback on your computer screen is just an approximation. To properly monitor you need an external monitor driven by an I/O card or box. You also need a fast external drive for your media, particularly, if your edit codec is HD. It’d help to know more about your system setup. That way folks can be more specific in their recommendations.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to help me?…I am currently running into problems with XDcam…I forgot to mention that I just bought a Matrox MXO2…Here Are My System Specs

Mac Pro 2×2.66Ghz Dual Core processors
    8Gb RAM
    3 Non-RAID SATA 7200 Hitachi 16Mb buffer drives (500Gb a piece)
    512Mb ATI Radeon XT1900
    1.33Ghz Frontside Bus
    FCP 6.0.5
    Mac OSX 10.5.9

With the MXO2, when I enable video playback via FCP, I have the sequence being displayed on my Plasma TV without any problems the first few minutes; however then I start getting dropped frames. Eventually, it gets to the point where I have only 200Mb of Free Available Memory….the rest of the memory is “wired”…restart the computer and it works fine but then same errors

To resolve this, i did the following:

    – Complete uninstall of the MXO2 software and Reinstall Version 1.4
    – Complete uninstall of MXO2 software and reinstall version 1.3
    – Sequence playback is set to Dynamic
    – Render Sequences using ProRes
    – Turned off “mirror playback”

Neither helped the situation…its a basic 720p60 XDcam footage…The tech from Matrox didn’t have a clue either…Any suggestions

I don’t edit with XDCAM, so these are general suggestions. Have you trashed FCP preferences and repaired permissions? Also, run Disk Warrior. If you don’t own it, order it. It’s invaluable for keeping your system happy. Another thing to try is delete your render files using the Render Manager and re-render. Hope this helps.
