    Hi everyone,

I’m looking at buying a Canon XH A1 camcorder, and like to hear from anyone who’s
got experience with using it. What is the best way (best quality output) to go,
edit in HDV or as I’ve read somewhere, import it as DVCPro 50?
Would a Firestore (I’m using one in my current DV workflow) anyhow simplyfy
importing (if there are any issues, I’ve heard that FCP 5.1.2 has solved some problems?

Secondly, how serious is reported chopiness in HDV footage, is it restricted only to 24f?

Panasonic and P2 cards is out of my price range, currently using Canon cameras, I’d
like to stay with Canon if possible.

Thank you in advance for your time

    Mick

I’ve worked with that very camera.

It was OK, but had issues that had work arounds. Like Timecode was a bit funky at times. Reported broken code where there was none. Could just recapture right over it. Was all 1080i though not 24fps.

I’ll wager that it’s very doable. 24 fps will have judder in most any format if the action is fast enough.

I’m stupid today. It was the SONY A1 camera… forget the post.

It’s had troubles. Search this and Apple’s Discussions group for threads using that exact model number there’s tons… Sony’s camera would likely be a better buy right now if you’re running FCP, and want to use it as a source deck too.

    Thnks for your reply Jerry,

I’m currently using Canon cameras and Panasonic MiniDV tapes (and Firestore but often
shoot is longer than FS-4s capacity). I’ve had trouble playing Sony tapes on Canon cameras,
probably because of the lubricant Sony is using.
Can I start a new Sony camera with Panasonic tapes amd that way avoid my problem?
Or the lubricant is in the camera itself (not only in tapes).

    Cheers

I don’t see any problems doing that… My students use Panny tapes in Sony cameras all the time… Canon has been touchy about this for what ever reason… Sony’s gear seems to send out a more reliable TC signal anyway… There’s not doubt though that if you switched to pro quality tape (DVCAM or DVCPRO tape) you’d find an easier time of it all. Mini DV tape will stretch especially if you use it more than once. DVCAM tape won’t do that… If you can record DVCAM instead of mini DV, you’ll find a much more reliable audiio sync situation and a better timecode recording.
