Anybody out there remotely editing projects where your client is at his/her (just to be fair) office and your in the editing suite? Specifically what I mean is that the client can see what your doing in near real time, see the program video or the timeline, talk back and forth, perhaps see eachother, etc. It sounds to me like video conferencing, but I’m sure its a bit more complicated than that.

If so, what are you using, how do you do it, etc? I’ve got a Symphony and couple of clients have expressed interest in working this way. Also what do you charge for something like this.

Any and all thoughs would be helpful. I dont even know where to go looking for info about this.

As far as I know there is no way to do this currently. The closest I have come so far is using Widows Media Files with window burns for approvals. Be careful what you wish for though, if this technology hits we may be in same boat as many IT professionals. You may be looking for a new line of work while some cat in Bombay is editing away at bargain basement rates.

There is a system out there called “Rose Edit”. A company I worked for had it but i think it was so expensive to use they hardky ever did. I dont know whi makes it but it is supposed to be like being in the same room with your client.

On the Avid Forums there is an interesting discussion of how this works on an internal network, although the bottom line is that it’d be awfully slow over the internet. They use some VNC software to show (also control) the editor desktop on another machine.

Here’s a suggestion I’ve seen in action, but it requires a second computer hooked up to the internet. Bring in a Powerbook or some equivalent pc, hook up an iSight or some equivalent webcam with a high enough refresh rate, point the camera at your client monitor and chat with the producer while showing the edit. It’s like the producer’s looking over your shoulder (minus the onion breath).
