Can anyone tell me how to work out the legality or how to find permission to work with samples of old movies?

I have a client who has snippets from old movies, featuring HIM as an extra or actor. We would like to use these small clips in a documantary we are making, but are unsure how to go about getting permission to use them.

Or is there any kind of rule that allows us to use small clips without obtaining permission?

    Many thanks,
    J

Well if this is for a “news” purpose then you might have some “fair-use” license. But if you are independent that is going to be hard to prove. The best thing is to go back to the copyright holders and get permission after explaining what you are doing. They probably will realize that you have no money to pay them and they will grant you informal permission for limited use. Use IMDB.com to locate the producer.
