Editing UHD 3840×2160 footage at 1920×1080 then batch importing afterwards?
Hi all,
My subject of this post pretty much asks the question, but to be more specific; I’m editing a project that was shot at 3840×2160 at 23.98 fps. In the past, I have edited 1920×1080 footage in DNxHD 36, which helped me edit without any computer lagging. Could I edit in that same way for the UHD 3840×2160 footage (meaning, my project is set up as 1920×1080, then import as DNxHD 36, and then batch import all of the used clips to 3840×2160 when I’m finished editing?

Forget IMPORTING and BATCH IMPORTING…you need to use AMA (or as MC8.4 calls it, ‘LINK’) to access the footage, and then transcode to DNx36 1080 23.98. When editing is done, relink the sequence to the AMA files and do what you want.
When you AMA link, SAVE THOSE BINS…that’s how you relink to the masters.

As Shane says importing is the legacy ingest method. AMA is the way. Far more flexible. You can use frame flex to pan and zoom within your UHD frame.

Thanks for that information! That’s very helpful. But still, just to know, is the workflow I mentioned still possible? Even if it’s not as convenient as AMA, would my suggested plan work? To be honest, I’ve felt more secure with import and have had no issues with it when I was working in 1080p.
