Editing suite – Color Correction Environment lighting (6500k)
I am converting a spare room in my house into a colorist/edit suite and would like to do it right, since I plan to offer my services to clients and start a business. I need some help with the lighting. There are conflicting views out there on the correct lighting to use. Some professionals in the industry state that their studios use standard incadescent/tungsten lighting dimmed down for editing. That color temperature is way off from the standard D65.
I’ve checked my local hardware stores, but none seem to have any type of bulbs, incadescent/led/halogen that are rated 90+ CRI and at 6500k. How important is it to get the correct lighting for an edit/colorist suite?

If you can’t control the lighting then your ability to judge color goes way down. Your eyes are biologically designed to shift color balance. That may be fine and well if you grade off scopes but your client won’t know any better if you’re in a supervised session. You could grade with the lights off but this induces eye fatigue quickly.
I use Feit Electric Ecobulb daylight CFLs which I found at Home Depot. Cheap and they have a color index of > 81; not perfect but a far better compromise then tungsten.

I would rather buy LED or CFL due to no heat. All the LED track lighting comes with 3000 k bright white bulbs. would that work, since ill just keep them dimmed low?

You’re looking at the wrong model. I am using bulb model ESL23TM/D also searchable as ESL23TMD.

so this is 6500k. but is it dimmable, and if so, does it maintain close to 6500k? If not I might as well just go with LED lights that are 3000k and be done with it. On other video forums, it looks like no editors/colorists actually use the correct color temperature lighting at work. They just work with what they have in a dim environment.

Need some suggestion on lighting for my editing suite . I have yellowish light in the edit room. I feel more stress on eyes. Should I change it to white or should I stick to it
