  • Editing RED files using proxy media in FCP X

I need a little help understanding how FCP X works. I’ve installed the RED APPLE WORKFLOW and imported native RED 6K footage. I then made proxy media files of everything. If I now edit in proxy media, create a final cut, can I delete the proxy files and export uncompressed or Pro Res 4444 if I choose?

I’ve read quite a bit about how a Mac Pro can handle native RED files, but I have an iMac that drops frames with the native files. If I CAN edit with proxy files, then export uncompressed RED, is their any advantage to editing in native RED?

    Thanks for the help!

You don’t have to delete them. You just switch from proxy to optimised.

Exactly. Do your cut/grading, etc. in proxy mode. When you’re done, flip the switch to optimized and export. Any rendering will need to be redone for playback if necessary, but if you’re just exporting at that point you don’t need to.

As others have stated the whole RED workflow with FCPX is deceptively simple. its latterly the flip of a switch.

Thanks everyone! Got it. Yes, it is surprisingly simple. Very happy to hear that it works this way.
