My specs: i7 3770K processor with 16GB of 1600 RAM. Win 7 64bit. The graphics card is a GeForce GTX650.

I can edit a raw .r3d project quite easily until about 2 minutes in, which is where preview starts getting really laggy. What could be upgraded on this system to reduce lag?

Probably dual Xeon processors (yes, they are still available and better than the awesome i7). You’ll need a new motherboard since the cpu pinout is different. And since you’re already going to spend $2k on just those items, might as well upgrade to 64gb RAM and the Quadro4000 video card.

And make sure you have a RAID 0 config, probably with 4 drives of SATA6 flavor.

The only difference I’d make to Dave’s answer is: Don’t get the Quadro 4000, get the K4000, or a GTX 680.

Would an upgrade to the GTX680 significantly improve playback with r3d?

As far as I know, the GPU will not improve R3D decompression. It’s either a Rocket or a high-end dual Xeon.
