  • Editing Premixed 5.1 Surround in FCP???

I’m about to start a job editing a multi-camera live concert video & the audio editor is in the process of creating a 5.1 surround mix of the entire show, which he plans to export for my edit as .ac3 files. To prep for the session I tried importing an .ac3 file into Final Cut 4.5. & got the error message “File Error: file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown.”

    1. Is there some other format that I should have him export the files so that I can edit to them. (this idea makes no sense to me as I will not be able to add audio without the project dipping to stereo at one point or another.)

    2. Should I export a stereo mix that includes alternate audio (backstage interviews/ vo’s), then export an OMF file for the audio editor? At that point he would (i guess) create a 5.1 surround mix of the entire program that could be matched to the video in the DVD authoring stage of the project.

    3. Should I not attempt this project in FCP?

You cannot do a real surround mix in FCP. You can (depending on your hardware) monitor multiple channels of audio, but you have no surround panning. FCP cannot work with ac3 or any other compressed audio formats. Use AIFF, Quicktime or WAV.

Edit your project as best you can and export an OMF for your audio editor to complete your sound mix.

I was in a similar situation.

There is a simple little program called mAC3dec that allows you to decode AC3 5.1 mixes into FCP-friendly stereo .AIFF files (you can choose other formats too).

https://sourceforge.net/projects/mac3dec/ (or elsewhere you can find it)

    cheers
